Forget the usual airport ads. Travelers passing through San Jose Mineta International Airport are now being welcomed by something far more meaningful — a powerful new mural by acclaimed artist Elizabeth Turk. Before her work arrived at the airport, Turk brought more than 2,000 people together at San Jose City Hall for Invisible Skies, a community-wide art experience where umbrellas transformed into stars and people became part of the artwork itself. In this story, we hear from the artist, airport officials, and travelers as they reflect on how public art can connect communities, spark conversation, and leave a lasting impact. Participants were even able to take their umbrellas home — turning one shared moment into a memory that will last for years. The mural will remain at the airport for months to come, reminding travelers that art belongs in everyday spaces — and that creativity can bring people together.
